A favourite Christmas memory

Christmas is a time full of traditions, laughter, and stories that stay with us long after the day itself. We asked the huunuu team to share their favourite Christmas memories - the little moments that mean the most.

Trevyn’s Christmas memory

One of my favourite Christmas memories is putting on a talent show with my cousins for our parents, aunties, uncles, and grandparents when we were little. It felt magical being centre stage in front of people we loved most. Afterwards, we’d all sit down together for Christmas dinner. It would be the whole family in one room sat at two large tables. The room was full of chatter and the smell of delicious food, a true moment of togetherness.

Then Father Christmas would arrive with a sack of presents, one for each of us, and we’d end his visit by taking a family photo. Once we all sang carols together! It wasn’t about the gifts it was the joy and laughter shared with family that made it so special.

Cherry’s Christmas memory

There are so many lovely Christmas memories for which I feel very lucky. The time I did a dip in the freezing Atlantic or a family Scottish Christmas. My experimental plum wine or the time I did caviar canapes, but everyone really wanted quality street!

The family traditions of friends presents and carols on Christmas Eve, stockings that must include a satsuma and chocolate gold coins, crackers and compulsory hat wearing. The walk that no-one really wants to do but is wonderful. The royal speech and a board game. Gran would always drink crème de menthe in a little glass. Dad would fall asleep on the floor and snore loudly. Mum’s quiz which would always include Angel Falls as an answer. All of the twinkly lights and delicious food, the obligatory film you’ve seen a million times before perhaps featuring James Bond, or Julie Andrews up a mountain.

There are so many lovely moments and it is very hard to pick just one. However I’m going to go with Tipsy Cake, which is the stuff of legend. This is Gran’s Boxing Day trifle that is laced with half a bottle of sherry which as children we thought was absolutely fantastic. It was a time before people worried so much about what they were eating and we enjoyed it for the treat it was. Writing this has reminded me that I must recreate it this year.

These stories remind us that it’s not the presents that make Christmas magical, it’s the people, the memories, and the legacy we build together.
